CARNIVAL IN LA VEGA

Carnival in La Vega is one of the oldest and most traditional carnivals celebrated in the Dominican Republic. Some researchers claim that the first carnival celebrations were held in La Vega Vieja (the old city of La Vega) as far back as 1520, when residents of La Vega dressed themselves as Muslims and Christians and participated in festivities that eventually became the modern-day carnival. Every Sunday during carnival season, the streets of La Vega are filled with visitors and lame devils parading about town.

CARNAVAL DE LA VEGA

El Carnaval de La Vega es uno de los más viejos y tradicionales que se celebran en la República Dominicana. Para unos investigadores, las primeras manifestaciones del carnaval se realizaron en las ruinas de La Vega Vieja. En 1520 se tenían noticias que los habitantes de la zona se disfrazaban de moros y cristianos y realizaban festejos que evolucionaron en las celebraciones actuales. Durante la época de Carnaval, las calles de La Vega se llenan de visitantes y diablos cojuelos que cada domingo corretean por las calles de la ciudad.
