Throughout the 1940s City College remained an average team, until that magical moment in 1949-1950 when the team defeated seven opponents in 16 days to win the NIT and NCAA tournaments in the same year, with three sophomores and two seniors as its starting five. College basketball would never witness anything like that again. The student body was full of excitement. New York City was the capital of basketball. Madison Square Garden was the world's most famous arena and City College was undeniably the best team in the country. The joy and excitement were unfortunately short lived. A year later four basketball players from CCNY were indicted for shaving points during the 1949-1950 season. Disbelief spread throughout the campus and the city that this could be true. There was such jubilation a year earlier and such disappointment a year later.
