From The Desk Of The Chief Librarian

nfrastructure - the permanent foundation or essential elements of a structure - is by definition, invisible to those who use or inhabit any structure. But, invisible as it may be, infrastructure is also high maintenance and in need of periodic upgrading.

Since recent infrastructure upgrades in the City College Libraries are not readily apparent to library users, I'd like to make you aware of them:

Electronic Classroom

In late May the Library Electronic Classroom with 26 networked computers, funded by the New York City Council, opened for use. No longer will we need to close off the main Internet area of the second floor for class use. An interactive SmartBoard projection system, provided by CUNY Library Services, will be added to the facility this semester.

In August and September the College funded replacement computer network wiring and switching hardware to bring our network up to current industry standard, which will increase the speed of information transfer over the network for all users.

In September, CUNY's Office of Instructional Technology provided a new interactive SmartBoard projection system for the Distance Learning facility.

New Computers

In August and September, CUNY Library Services provided 150 new computers so that we can replace the old CUNY+ terminals that are becoming unreliable. You may have noticed that we have already put the new machines in place and are working as rapidly as possible to get them configured for your use.

During the summer, additional sprinklers were installed in the Library Atrium and the rooms which surround it in order to enhance fire safety.

And, there is more infrastructure work to come before the end of 1999. At long last, the Dormitory Authority will be repairing the leaky glass roof of the Library Atrium. Exterior repair will begin in November, and interior work will be done in January. Beginning December 22, the Science/Engineering Library will be recarpeted.

We are also revamping printing services, as our previous networked printing provider, GoPrint, has been unreliable for customer service. This work will continue throughout the fall semester, and we appreciate your patience during this process.

Comments, suggestions, and feedback regarding the Library’s services are always welcome and should be addressed to me by calling x7271, sending email to prgcc@scisun.sci.ccny.cuny.edu, or by dropping by NAC 5/333 (Cohen Library).
