The City College of New York Libraries are working to digitize our archives and unique holdings.
It is only fitting that we began with the Papers of the Free Academy of New York. This collection documents the establishment and early organization of the first institution of public higher education in the United States, one which predates the Midwestern state land-grant colleges by two decades. The Free Academy existed for nineteen years until its “burial” on April 30, 1866, and instantaneous rebirth as the College of the City of New York, or CCNY.
In addition to the Free Academy papers, other digital collections on this site include all issues of The Campus from its founding in 1907 until 1981, selected Stadium Concerts Review chronicling performance in Lewisohn Stadium, images from the College’s art collection, online exhibitions, and more. And there is much more to come.
