Three women--Dr. Alice Chandler, Dr. Augusta Souza Kappner and Dr. Yolanda T. Moses--have held the top administrative post at City College: two acting presidents and one president.

Dr. Alice Chandler
Acting President, 1979-1980

Dr. Alice Chandler was a member of The City College faculty for nearly 20 years in the English Department. Prior to her appointment as Acting President, Dr. Chandler also served as Chair of the Faculty Senate, as Vice-President for Institutional Development and as Provost.

Before joining the College faculty in 1961, Dr. Chandler taught at Barnard, Skidmore and Hunter colleges. She is a former associate editor of Challenge and is the author of A Dream of Order: The Medieval Ideal in Nineteenth-Century England and The Theme of War, the first in a series of volumes on the themes of love, war, the machine and justice.

Dr. Chandler left City College in 1980 to become President of the State University of New York at New Paltz.
