Frederick B. Robinson, who later became president of City College, is shown
here in this picture lecturing to a class of women on the art of public speaking.
The extension division of City College, which offered the course, began in
1910, and some of the College’s most outstanding faculty members taught
its classes. It conducted courses in the late afternoon and evening for teachers
and librarians in the public schools-many of whom were women. The New York
Times reported in September 1913 that the College’s Department of Education
had complete control over the courses: “Prof. Robinson presents another
phase of language in two courses on oral English and methods of teaching reading.
Each course will extend over fifteen sessions. The first course presents two
branches of oral English; the philosophy of expression and methods and analysis
of modern methods of teaching reading.” |
