Sarachik
Distinguished Professor of Physics
Dr. Sarachik has been elected President of the American Physical Society
for 2003. She is currently Vice President of the prestigious Society
and will serve next year as President-Elect. She is also a Fellow of
the American Academy
of Arts and Sciences. The Academy has honored leading intellectuals
from both the U.S. and abroad in every field and profession since its
founding in 1780.
Its membership includes 160 Nobel laureates and 65 Pulitzer Prize winners.
Professor Sarachik is an internationally recognized researcher in the
field of condensed matter and low temperature physics.
In 1995 she received the Mayor’s Award for Excellence in Science and
technology for her work in mathematics and the physical and engineering
sciences.
A native of Belgium, Professor Sarachik emigrated to the U.S. from
Havana, Cuba, in 1947. She earned a B.A. cum laude from Barnard
College in 1954, an
M.S. from Columbia in 1957 and a Ph.D., also from Columbia, in
1960. |
