“Once the ‘coeds’ really
arrived, the Alumnus magazine found them an inexhaustible source for covers,
whether in shorts dribbling basketballs, in tulle evening gowns begin crowned
as beauty queens, or in tight sweaters pursuing education degrees. There was
even an article documenting the ‘feminine’ touch they had brought
to the campus. President Harry Wright was quoted as saying, ‘We welcome
the girls with open arms.’ Nameless instructors were reported to have
changed their lecture vocabulary as their former ‘earthy’ approach
was out of place in mixed groups.”
